Anti-Russian protests broke out in Abkhazia

Thousands of opponents of the signing of the investment agreement with Russia storm the building of the parliament of the “republic”.

Anti-Russian protests broke out in the self-proclaimed republic of Abkhazia, which is de facto a territory of Georgia. Thousands of opponents of the signing of the investment agreement with Russia came to the parliament building.

They broke the fence and broke into the territory. Clashes began. This was reported by Echo of the Caucasus on Friday, November 15.

People went to the parliament building, where they were supposed to vote for the ratification of the agreement, which would give Russian business unprecedented benefits in the region. Protesters were pelted with smoke grenades, and they broke through the fence around the building.

Local Telegram channels report the use of gas and the sounds of gunshots.

The day before, the speaker of the People’s Assembly, Lasha Ashuba, announced the cancellation of the parliament session, as the deputies failed to approve the agenda. Two deputies out of 35 were present at the meeting.

The opposition of Abkhazia opposes the ratification of the agreement on the implementation of investment projects by Russian legal entities on the territory of the “republic”.

At the end of October, an agreement was signed in Moscow under which large Russian businesses receive unprecedented benefits, the opportunity to implement their projects on the territory of Abkhazia, as well as the right to own land and property.

It will be recalled that earlier NATO declared full support for the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Georgia and called on Russia to withdraw its troops from the territory of South Ossetia and Abkhazia.
